  • Mistral is a strong cold wind. 
  • It can damage / destroy the vines and reduce the yields.
  • Strong winds durling flowering time cause coulure (more flowers fail to fertilize) and reduce the yields. 
  • Due to the cold winds, grapes may be struggled to ripen fully.

  • How do growers deal with the problems of Mistral?

  • Vines are often tied to a single stake or a teepee like arrangement of stakes. This catches the wind less.
  • Vines are often below a ridge on south facing slopes protected from the Mistral.

  • Viognier is important grape variety in Northern Rhone. State the commune where it is mostly found and describe the main characteristics of the grape variety.

  • Condrieu 
  • Full bodied. Often low acidity. Medium to high alcohol. It offers sweet fruit aromas (peach, apricot, quince, pineapple) with very aromatic floral and perfume (acacia, orange blossom, honeysuckle).

  • Explain why very high quality Viognier wine is produced in this commune.

  • Viognier do not develop their signature aromas (blossom, apricot) until vary late in the season.
  • Best vineyard of Condrieu is situated on steep, well-exposed, terraced and south-facing aspect. These conditions maximizes the sunlight and help the grape ripen fully to develop the grape’s signature aromas.
