The Growing Environmentの練習問題①(英語版)
  • What is diurnal range?

Diurnal range is difference between daytime and nighttime temperature.

  • The style of wine is deeply influenced by the diurnal range in the region. Name two factors that influence the diurnal range.
  • Large bodies of water such as seas, lakes, and rivers have slower temperature changes, which reduces the diurnal temperature variation.
  • The level of cloud cover influences the diurnal range. On clear nights without insulating cloud cover, temperatures drop quickly, while on cloudy days, when sunlight cannot directly heat the ground, temperatures rise slowly.
  • Why is the large diurnal range important in warm and hot region?

In warm/hot region grapes tend to ripen fully quickly and lose their acidity easily. During the cool night vines are able to accumulate their flavor and preserve their natural acidity.

  • Spring frost is a problem in many wine regions. What is the most likely climate to experience frost?

Cool continental climate.

  • You are going to have a vineyard in a frost prone area. What could you do to reduce the risk of frost during the vineyard layout and planting.
  • Select grape that is tolerate to cold. Late budding decrease the risk of spring frost.
  • The vine should be trained high. It can minimize the effect of a ground frost.
  • The vine should be planted on slope that has better frost drainage. Avoid any hollow where frost pond.
  • Remove any trees, bushes and building for better air circulation.
  • Suggest three management techniques you could install at the vineyard to mitigate frost risk and explain their use.
  • Wind machines. Large funs move warmer air from above to ground. The warmer air is mixed with the freezing air around the ground. It reduces the risk of ground frost.
  • Heaters. Placed around the vineyard. Warm the air of the vineyard and create air flow. Cold air won’t be settled.
  • Sprinkler. Spraying water on buds. Water create some heat when they turn into the ice. It avoids very low temperature.
  • State the name of a prolong water shortage.

Drought

  • Describe the affect on the vine.
  • The vine can temporally stop transpiration to preserve resource.
  • The vine stop photosynthesis, wilting leaves and grapes fail to ripen.
  • This can kill the vine.
  • Name three irrigation techniques.

Drip irrigation / Sprinkler / Flood irrigation

  • Your vineyard is located on steep slope and facing water shortage. Besides the cost of water is high at that area. What method of irrigation you would install for the vineyard? Explain why you choose the method.
  • Drip irrigation.
  • Drip irrigation uses the least amount of water. (Sprinkler and Flood irrigation much more water than Drip irrigation.)
  • Flood irrigation doesn’t suit steep slope. Flood irrigation needs to be on flat land or gentle slope.
