  • Sangiovese. Can be blended with other grapes.

ここでのMontepulcianoは地名です。ぶどう品種名と混同しないよう注意しましょう。

  • How does Sangiovese contribute to the style of wine?

  • Sangiovese is late ripening variety. It has high levels of tannin and high acidity.
  • It has full of red fruit aroma (cherry, plum) and spices / herb notes.
  • It has an affinity with oak and has excellent ability to age.

  • State and describe the climate of the area which produces Brunello di Montalcino.

  • It’s southern Tuscany. It’s warm mediterranean climate with coastal maritime breeze.
  • It’s lower altitude than northern area. It’s warmer but it has cool maritime breeze from south-west.
  • It has low amount of rainfall. It’s one of warmest part in Tuscany.

  • How do the climate / weather pattern contribute to the style of wine?

  • The wines achieve high alcohols (14%) due to the heat, sunlight and lack of rain.
  • They tend to be fuller bodied. 
  • They have higher acidity due to the cool breeze from the sea and the mountains.
  • Sangiovese is very late ripening. Due to the longer growing season, it can ripen fully with high tannins here.

  • How long must Brunello di Montalcino be aged (total / oak / bottle ) before release?

  • The wine must be matured for a minimum of 5 years.
  • 2 years in Oak and 3 years in bottle.
